USDA publishes Final Rule for Mexican Hass avocado import program expansion

Fresh Directions maintains steady Mexican Hass Avocado harvest for the USA

USDA Published Final Rule for Mexican Hass avocado import program

Tuesday, November 30, 2004, the USDA published the Final Rule for expansion of the Mexican Hass avocado import program.  The expansion encompasses the following important changes, effective January 31, 2005:

1.  Shipments will be permitted to all States with the exception of a two year delay for shipments to California, Florida and Hawaii.

2.  Shipments will be permitted on a year round basis.

3.  The use of Compliance Agreements will no longer be required.

Since inception of the Mexican Hass avocado program in November 1997, Fresh Directions has been a leading exporter and importer.  We believe that this ruling is good for the avocado industry, retail and foodservice trade and consumers.  Because of the vast growing area and micro-climates in Michoacan, Fresh Directions can supply Mexican Hass avocados year round as we have for the Japanese market for many years. For more information on the ruling, visit the USDA website at www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/avocados.

Fresh Directions Maintains Steady Mexican Hass Avocado Harvest

So far this season high inventories and stiff competition from other origins has slowed shipments of Mexican Hass avocado in the US versus previous seasons.  Despite the abundance of competitive fruit, Fresh Directions is maintaining its harvest and shipments at a steady pace to allow us to supply fresh fruit for our customers.  Our harvest and packing efforts continue to focus on freshness, premium sizes and quality.  Ample supplies are available for shipment from our distribution points in Vineland, NJ; Chicago, IL; and Denver, CO.
